Crate Training a Goldendoodle Puppy (we start before 8 weeks)

Crate training is one of the most valuable skills you can give your Goldendoodle puppy and it’s something we begin long before they ever go home with you. By starting early, we help create a positive association with the crate so your puppy sees it as a safe, comfortable space rather than something unfamiliar or stressful.

Why We Start Early
Between 3–8 weeks of age, puppies are in a critical learning period. During this time, they are naturally more adaptable and open to new experiences. We use this window to gently introduce short, positive crate experiences so the transition to your home is much smoother.

Creating Positive Associations
Our goal is simple: the crate equals comfort and security. Puppies are introduced to the crate in a low-pressure way with soft bedding and littermates nearby. As they grow, we begin short, individual crate sessions, often after playtime when they’re naturally ready to rest. This helps them learn to settle and relax on their own.

Building Independence
Early crate training isn’t just about sleep, it’s about confidence. By spending brief periods alone in a safe space, puppies begin to develop independence and learn that being alone is okay. This foundation helps reduce anxiety and makes future training much easier.

Encouraging Good Habits
Puppies naturally avoid soiling where they sleep, so crate exposure also supports early potty habits. While they’re still very young, this introduction lays the groundwork for easier house training once they go home.

An Easier Transition Home
One of the biggest benefits of early crate training is what happens after pickup day. Puppies who have already been introduced to the crate tend to settle in faster, sleep better at night and adjust more quickly to a new routine. It takes much of the guesswork (and stress) out of those first few days.

What This Means for You
When your puppy comes home, they won’t be starting from scratch. Instead, you’ll be continuing a foundation that’s already been built. With consistency and positive reinforcement, most puppies quickly adapt to sleeping in their crate and using it as their own safe space.

Crate training done right creates a sense of security, builds confidence and sets the tone for a well-adjusted dog. By starting before 8 weeks, we’re giving your Goldendoodle the best possible start and making life easier for you from day one.
